Thanks

I’m on a twelve step program of some sort. It’s different from most in that I’m inventing the steps as I go. I need to say “Thanks” right now, something I don’t do enough. So here goes.

I’m thankful for:

Friends, you have been, and continue to be, life saving. Thank you.

All the dogs I have known.

Snow.

Rain.

Trees, you have contributed your essence in life and afterwards.

All the other species that share this planet with us. Even cats. You are awesome, may you persist long after we are gone.

Sail boats.

Surfing and big waves.

Big tides and the ecologies they support.

Music.

Sunsets.

Alaska, with the opportunites to view enormous vistas. They are not only beautiful but you know that it includes many spots where our species has never set foot.

Fly fishing.

Pain. We wouldn’t have survived this long without it. And it makes the rest of life that much sweeter.

Memories. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Soccer. It makes the world go round.

Regrets. Sometimes they can actually motivate change for the good.

Grandchildren and their parents.

There is so much more to be thankful for, maybe later. For now here’s the obligatory photo.

Stay safe Y’all.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
