Jay’s new home

My thanks to the Teagues (the elderly side of the family that is) for babysitting Jay for a few years and sending him back to me at my request. Born in 1984, Jay has always been an inspiration to me. His creator was Joe Fries who carved birds in his spare time when he wasn’t managing the moulding room at my local lumber yard in Evergreen, CO.

Joe was a master at his “hobby” and there was always a long waiting list for any of his creations. I told him I really wanted a piece of his work and could he do a Stellar Jay for me. He said he could if I had $600 and six months. I said, “Absolutely”. That was a lot of money to spend on a wooden bird at that time but I’ve never regretted it.

Jay arrived in perfect condition and we had perfect weather in which to introduce him to Homer. He has settled in nicely and watches TV with me every night. Here he is on my driftwood side table.

Since neither of those pictures do him justice, here’s one with better lighting.

Joe passed away a while back. I don’t know how many of his creations live on, but I do know the world is a better place having had him for a brief moment in time.

Stay safe.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
