Just Breath

I’ve been in therapy since 2012. First there was 15 minutes of couples therapy which was how long it took before my ex explained that it was my problem, not hers, and leave. What followed was both transformative and life saving (at least for me and possibly my ex) and is ongoing. I have had instruction for breathing techniques that are good tools for spinning down from triggering events. These have been helpful but not a cure all.

Until I listened to Terry Gross on her “Fresh Air” podcast interviewing the author of a new book about the effects of mouth breathing. He recounts his personal participation in an experiment. The link to the podcast is here: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/381444908/fresh-air. It is a fascinating account of the physiology of the breathing process and its effect on brain function.

Then I had the opportunity to use my new understanding. The best steak house in Homer opened for Friday and Saturday dinners so I indulged in their blue cheese chips followed by a beautiful steak accompanied by a generous supply of Makers Mark (they didn’t have Gentleman Jack).

So, when I woke in the wee hours with raging heartburn and hartbeat, I grabbed some Tums and tried a deep breathing technique while taking my pulse. The results were amazing. I could feel my pulse slow dramatically with the first exhale. After three breaths I was able to resume sleep. It was not a new technique for me but it was the first time that the results were so dramatic.

My whole outlook on life has been improving ever since. It is a start to actually dealing with this PTSD thing, so I wanted to share with my veteran friends. If you don’t need this, it is still a great podcast.

Stay safe.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
