Staying Fit

Seems like no two photos of the spit from this location are the same. It’s one of my favorite spots to watch the sunrise and see yet another unique view of the spit. When I showed you some of my favorite boats in the harbor………..

………I left out one of the great bargains available here in Homer. I think this would be the perfect project boat for Larry. Nice lines.

But this post is about keeping fit in the frozen north. We just had the second annual .5 K run. It is billed as the “Brew to Brew” run and starts at one of my favorite Breweries, Grace Ridge Brewery and ends up at my most favorite brewery, the Homer Brewing Company. Here are some of the contestants having their pre race beer ( included in your entry fee is a beer at the start and finish ). Here’s the start.

Meet “Lazy Boy and the Recliners”

Spidy was there.

Some came prepared for ANY contingency.

High water or Hell.

That is our Guvnor cutting various extravagancies (like schools or the ferry system) out of the state budget

I loved the matching hair.

Every potential hazard was considered.

It ended up here.

There were two rest stops along the way. One with Oreo shots (an Oreo cookie in a paper cup) and the other with water and a reusable shopping bag.

I’ve been in training all week. The routine included Kale smoothies and beer, not together but if anyone tries that out, let me know how it goes.

I was first over the finish line but was also immediately disqualified for riding my bike. At least they didn’t confiscate my beer tickets.

Been hunting driftwood. Much easier than fishing, you usually don’t have to sneak up on them, but you do have to be discrete when carrying it up to your car. Removing it is illegal on some beaches. This piece is destined to rest on one of my coffee tables as soon as it dries out.

One thing about the weird weather we’ve had this summer, a lot more bike riding.

Rather than wish you all perfect weather, I’ll just wish you luck in coping with whatever extreme weather event is happening in your neck of the woods. Think I’ll go for a ride, as you may have guessed, the weather here is perfect for it (even though it rained this morning).

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!

  1. Well, now, this tops all of the posts. I’m crying in my beer because I’m laughing my ass off and wishing I was there. God, we need more of this in our world. Thanks Troy!!
