Boats

I heard myself answering the usual “How long have you lived in Alaska” question with this.

“I’ve been an Alaskan all my life. I just didn’t know it until I moved here”.

Actually, as you know, it took moving here twice and all that crap in between before I figured that out.

But this is about boats.

I have never actually owned a boat. I’ve lived aboard and briefly skippered some nice boats; but no ownership. This means that I’ve yet to experience the happiest and second happiest days of my life. It is not because I’ve never been tempted. It just seems that my life situation never permitted such a large expense for a toy I could live in.

Homer has boats. Homer makes boats. There are several excellent boat builders in town; the best known would be Bay Weld. They make premium aluminum boats. Here is the nicest one in the harbor.

Most of their boats are a bit smaller.

Perfect for fishing and camping out of Homer.

Every once in a while one of my favorite boats comes up for sale.

Then there are boats that are just plain examples of  great craftsmanship. This one was built by a local.

Not your typical outboard. If it ever comes up for sale it will be time to sell everything else and move onboard.

One last thing, I’m currently trying a daily Kale smoothie. Gotta get the greens somehow.

Don’t get me started on the weather.

Stay safe y’all.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
