PS, Home For The Dogs & Threads For The Handle

Had to wrap this up. Couldn’t leave loose ends. This will be the last installment about benchtop benches, honest.

Tried the all epoxy threads and it worked great. The epoxy cut threads like firm butter. I know, I need to work on my analogies. Here’s the handle getting epoxy on the top while the opposite end soaks in acetone. Have to get all the linseed oil out so the epoxy will stick. The top section has already been treated. Then I sawed and filed the rod end to an octagon for the epoxy to grip while leaving all epoxy in the thread section. You can see the test run in the upper right corner.

I’m using the leftover piece from the main body of the handle as a mould for the threaded section on the top end. It has a nice 1″ bore and has been soaking in linseed oil overnight so the epoxy won’t stick to it.

You may have noticed that the bench dogs have a parking place. I drilled holes in the side of the bench and put a small screw in the center of the bottom of the holes. All that was left was to glue a magnet to the bottom of the dogs and they will stay put between uses.

The final step was to replace the white fiberglass ( a piece of a ski pole ) that was serving as magnet holder for the extension locking pin tool with a wood dowel.

I think I can call er done. I’ve already branded the underside but I’m thinking of branding the face of the handle hub. I’d like to put it on the top half of the octagon and put a “Pask Makes” logo upside down on the bottom half since he’s from “down under”. That way one of us will always be right side up. I’ll see how Neil Paskin feels about that when I email him with a letter of thanks for the project.

For now I can get back to enjoying the rest of one of the weirdest Alaskan winters I’ve seen.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
