Not Your Everyday Outhouse

We have a lot of artistic talent in Homer. Among them is a carpenter namer Taro. He brings traditional Japanese technique into all his projects. He has a remarkable relationship with wood. Here is an outhouse that Bill and Shellie had him make for them.

I have offered any of the diamond willow sticks I have for door pulls, toilet paper racks or whatever they might think might fit in.

They said the step from the path up to the “porch” could use a grab bar. So we found a short scrap and I devised an attachment system.

I used the strap from a heavy duty stainless pipe clamp and brazed it to a nut. Then cut some aluminum tubbing for the standoff.

It was surprisingly easy to do and more surprisingly worked on the first iteration.

This was the test rig to make sure I had the right length bolts and also serve as the drill guide on the post.

The good karma extended through the installation and all went well on the first try.

Next I’m going to try splitting some thicker pieces I have and apply them to the posts.

As they say, “Watch this space”.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
