Getting Ready To Ride

Leaving on a six week road trip next monday. Got numerous checklists, a new pack pack and a booster shot, so this should go smoothly, right? If past experiences are any indication, I’ll find out what the first thing I forgot was right after the cab drops me off at the airport.

Experienced travelers have advised me to practice wearing a mask for long periods of time at home to build up my “mask tolerance”. So far this is the only effective mask that is both comfortable and doesn’t fog up my glasses.

This mask only protects me, not those around me (due to the flapper style exhalation valve) but that is fine with me. The rest of you have had ample time to protect yourselves.  I will take additional measures to protect children under twelve.

Been meaning to put a picture of the airbnb across the street from the Wild Honey. They put up some new art this year.

The fence still has the old art.

The last couple of nights have been super clear and I’ve been able to see Jupiter with my cheapo spotting scope. I could even make out the four Galilean moons on two of the nights. There is something spiritual about viewing celestial bodies live and in person. It beats the shit out of church.

There will be a real telescope in my future.

Stay safe out there.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
