Earl Update

Yes, another dog posting. Gonna be that way for a while yet. We are still bonding and that will probably continue for a while yet, say another couple of years.

Earl went fishing for the first time. Bill wanted to go trolling for winter Kings (a bit of a misnomer, as they are here year round) and that was perfect for Earl and I. He and David Lewis did all the fishing while Earl and I watched and drove the boat.

He was happy to observe from this perch.

Bill really needs to get a new king net, but this one was able to land five Kings before getting retired. It was at least ten years old, more like fifteen or twenty. It’s only broken in two spots; may be salvageable. I took home a nice fillet from a 20 lb white king. Realized too late that I probably should have photographed it.

Later, I saw this moose at the CC ski trails next to Bill and Shellie’s house.

Meanwhile, the Sandhills are practicing formation flight with the kids in larger and larger flights. We are all wishing they could stick around but know they must leave soon. We’ll miss them and look forward to their return.

Doing a little tinkering in the shop. Getting close to finishing the new ebony vise handle. I’m currently planning to take a trip to the interior to get some diamond willow stock. Finally found a guy that is actively harvesting it in Gulkana.

Finally, here’s one of Eli just being Eli after a swim.

He’s been a trooper, sharing his humans with Earl.

Enjoy your Labor Day, the weather here is perfect for it. Hoping the same holds for all y’all.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
