Texas Does A Memorial

First you have to meet one half of the Fries two Goldens.

She rapidly became everyone’s best friend, as long as nonstop petting or ball retrieval was involved.

During my stay in Austin we went to the New Texas State Vietnam Memorial. Unfortunately, the weather was not perfect. So, no photos from that visit. The memorial was awesome, even if we didn’t get to linger up close.

The story of how the memorial came to be is captured in a documentary film you can see at the official website: http://tcvvm.org/education/  go to the “monument tour” drop down menu.

It took ten years and Texas did a great job putting it all together. Cheryl and Pat did a great job telling the story. I particularly loved the details of construction which gave me new appreciation of what goes into creating a bronze & stainless structure.

Cheryl sent me some quality photos of the monument which I’ll share here. I know you all have busy lives but taking the time to watch any of their films is worth the investment. I promise this is the last time I’ll make the pitch. At least until the next time.

The detail and accuracy is nothing less than astounding.

The members of the 1st of the 9th Cav were so thankful for their efforts in behalf of all Vietnam vets that they gifted them with official 1st Cavalry Stetsons.

They are very reluctant to wear them because they are official headgear that only members of the 1st Cav are authorized to wear. But I agree with the members that gifted them, they’ve earned them.

Thanks for putting up with me. I know the journey isn’t always easy but I appreciate all of you. I’ll try to keep it more upbeat and light hearted in the future. Lots of landscapes and animal pictures.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
