Stephen King Ice
Winter is not done with us up here.
I had to make a “quick” trip to Anchorage a few days ago. It had snowed a little the day before but the roads were in good shape. There was good traction but lots of road spray even with temperatures in the teens. I stopped for gas in Girdwood where the wind was northerly at 30G50; not unusual for the Turnagain Arm.
This less than perfect weather was not ideal for taking pictures but I had to take a few of the ice buildup on the sides of my car. This is the lower door panel.
The rear wheels had delicate ice hubcaps. A bit spooky.
The return trip the next day had the perfect winter driving conditions. Still strong winds and cold but dry roads and clear skies. I think this is one of the most scenic drives in the state. Especially with fresh snow. There aren’t a lot of pull outs for photography when the berms are 6′ high. I hiked to the top of this one and managed a quick shot without getting blown off.
This is a few of the ice boulders that are a result of the tides in really cold conditions. These were on the Kenai River. The Turnagain Arm is full of them but I wimped out with because of the winds.
Back in Homer it is a balmy 15 degrees but the clear and longer days have been eating the snow. The lawns are visible and the moose are grazing on them as they transition from winter browsing to summer grazing. The first Sandhill cranes have been spotted overhead and it looks like winter’s grip is slipping.
Life is good!
Stay safe y’all.
