Fish Camp

Up here that means only one thing; a camp set up in a seasonal location for the sole purpose of harvesting a years worth of fish in a few months during the short arctic summer. There is usually lots of harvesting of wild flora to put up for the winter too. Mostly lots of hard work with little time to waste on sleeping.

I am ready for the seasonal labor to show up to handle the heavy work. The yellow tarp I had made in the 70’s to cover the “covered wagon conversion”. It was a rare Ford Econoline pick up version of the van.

Here it is being used along with the Klein’s tent camper in 1978 when it snowed on us in July at Rabbit Ears Pass Colorado.

Unfortunately, the seams are no longer waterproof so the yellow had to give way to “big brown brother”.This configuration is doing ok but needs a little tweaking to get the work area between tents just right. Tony, Chad and I may tackle it after coffee this morning but it will involve ladders and many hands for sure. We’ve got to find the right time with no wind.

Whis is where the smoking will take place, already got the first batch done and it looks like it will work out fine. In two days Roger, Mike and the fish will arrive and the carnage may begin.

Weather promises to be perfect for it, light rain and no wind.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
