Fighting The Tide

Last winter a storm closed off the outlet of the Beluga Slough. The Slough changed overnight from a tidal salt marsh to a less salty lake that only the highest tides could reach. Of course it found a new path to the sea but some of the residents got nervous at the new high water level and asked the powers that be to do some dirt work and open up the original channel.

The powers that be finally decided that this was the providence of ADFG and they planned to reopen the channel after the Sandhill Cranes left for their winter home (Google says that is in California’s central valley). This is how it looked when the old channel was restored about three weeks ago.

The beach and the high school are the only places in town where Earl gets to chase balls and other puppies while off lead. That brown dot at the top of the outlet is a chocolate lab.

Anyway, three weeks later this is how it looks.

That dark line of seaweed and logs is the high tide line from the tide that closed off the outlet again. Their “fix” didn’t last a month.

Once again we prove that we are out of our league when we mess with mother nature.

As you can see, the colors are starting to change. We are getting the best weather of the year this September. Perfect!

Hope your fall is making up for the summer.

Stay cool.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
