Earth cake And The A Train
The Amys decided to celebrate Earth Day with a cake, an earth cake. There would be five layers representing the layers of the earth from the surface to bedrock.
Here are the Amys doing final assembly with the finishing touch, a field of grass. The cookie pans are cauliflower ready for roasting.
The thing is enormous, must be 5000 calories per slice.
The layers are chocolate (organic layer), carrot cake (top soil), pecan (sub soil layer), Oreo (parent material layer) and vanilla for bed rock.
It was excellent but way too much to finish even one slice. Should have been the whole dinner rather than desert.
Somehow all the children managed to finish their piece.
So we all got to bed late after a bizillion empty calories and then got up early (6:30) to catch the A Train. I should explain for you jazz buffs that today was the grand opening of the brand new “A” train to the airport. To celebrate the city of Denver made today a free ride the rails day.
We started early to beat the crowds. The day began at the western edge of the rail system in Golden. First we rode the W train to Union Station.
Still empty but that wouldn’t last. Then on to the new A train and DIA airport. Arriving under the Weston Hotel.
There the party began. There was music.
Face painting and all kinds of exhibits.
Derek and I deferred.
While The Sodens checked out the exhibits and collected tons of free stuff, I checked out the terminal, famous for it’s design which resembles a group of tepees.
These are stainless straps weighted at the bottom and hung from a pivot point just above the weight. They sway in the wind an look like a field of stainless grass, as was the intent.
On the hillside are telephone polls arranged in what looks to me like a fish skeleton minus the head and tail. I’m not sure what the artist had in mind. In the foreground are concrete railroad ties and colored rock.
There were parties at each stop and after returning to Union Station for lunch, the crowds were building.
We went as far south as the C train went and then came back to Golden by around 2:30. A little later Amy’s friends were tweeting that the lines had grown to over two hours long. So it looked like Derek’s plan worked perfectly.
Rest and Spring cleaning is the plan for tomorrow.
The weather should be perfect for it.
Trains are such a great idea.
