Textures & Memorial Day

Remember to remember this weekend.

We haven’t fought a war for freedom since the Revolutionary War. This doesn’t stop us from asking our young men and women to die for the good of “Merica”. I don’t wish to dishonor those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. The dishonor belongs to those that made it necessary. Until we all feel shame on Memorial Day, we will keep having these wars.

Some fifty plus years ago I took my first photography class in high school. Our first assignment was to set up and photograph something in the studio that emphasized texture. That first assignment didn’t produce anything ground breaking. It did make me look at the beauty of textures in everyday objects. This figured Maple appears to have deep texture but it’s surface is smooth and flat.

It’s depth of character becomes apparent when you tilt it from side to side and watch how the waves move.

Texture is where you find it. Just keep looking. I liked this shot of the beach at the Homer spit so much I use it as the wallpaper on my laptop.

Oxygen loves to texture many things.

We have a Coast Guard Buoy Tender stationed on the Spit. So we have a lot of buoys. And their anchors with chain.

Bill & Shellie leave for three weeks in Italy in a few days, so I’ll be house sitting for a bit. Then the reds will start showing up and the dance will begin in earnest.

The weather should be perfect.

About

So far I've reached acceptable proficiency at the following, in chronological order: Silversmith, infantryman/door gunner, helicopter pilot, fireman, carpenter, residential contractor, FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist and crotchety old retired guy. Currently, I'm learning to fly again and that is what this is all about. 7/7/2020 edit: As I have had the opportunity to reflect (old people do that a lot) on my actual proficiency level at the above occupations, I feel adjustments are in order. The term "acceptable" depends on the observer, their own proficiency and experience level. Acceptable to me might be woefully deficient to the master. I think it would be more accurate to claim that I have earned a living wage at all of these occupations but never got rich. Actually, I feel that I have gotten rich at the last one. I have what I need and am profoundly grateful for all of it. The future looks bright indeed, as I have learned to fly again. For that I have all of you to thank. Thank You!
